André Glucksmann started life as a militant Marxist-Maoist and the darling of the left.

Horrified by Mao’s reign of terror, Stalin’s mass murders and Jewish pogroms Glucksmann, who was jewish, deserted the ultra-left.

True to Churchill’s witty truism:

« If you’re not communist at 20 you have no heart. If you are at 30 you have no brain. »

France’s  powerful extreme left*, caviar gauche », was appalled and branded Glucksmann a traitor. Accusing him of being a pro-American lackey.

*Remember Prime Minister Jospin was a Trotskyist.

Glucksmann retorted in 1991 – « First you think. If it corresponds with the Left then you are Left, if Right then you are of the Right. But the idea of thinking Left or Right is a sin against the spirit and an illusion. »

That is what made André Glucksmann a true intellectual and philosopher.
